John Lennon has no known grave. After he was cremated at Ferncliff Cemetery in Hartsdale, New York, his ashes were kept by Yoko Ono. Some believe his ashes were scattered in Strawberry Fields, a place dedicated to him in New York's Central Park. It is just across the road from the Dakota building where he was shot by Mark Chapman on 8 December 1980.
Strawberry Fields named after one of his songs, "Strawberry Fields Forever." It was designed by landscape architect Bruce Kelly.

Beautiful. It reminds me somewhat of the grave of President Kennedy.

ReplyDeleteBeautiful post and capture of the sensitivity in the placement of the flowers at the memorial Peter. I walked through this area while in New York in October last year, although it was not quite as peaceful then as a large group were gathered around the memorial paying tribute to John Lennon's life.
ReplyDeleteIs the circular memorial close to the Central Park "Strawberry Fields", then, Peter. I read what you said on Dianne's blog about the original SF being a Sallies home around the corner from where Lennon grew up.
ReplyDeleteI agree he was charismatic. I was totally stunned the day he died. Just sat there all afternoon. Listening to his uninterrupted music on the radio.
Their life (and death) fall into folklore after a while, celebrities who die young. It is often difficult to tell reality from myth.

Brilliant post Peter, Like JUlie I remember exactly what I was doing when they announced his death, just couldn't believe it at first. I'm glad he doesn't have a 'formal' gravesite, I think he would have hated that!
