"Sydney's buried history you'll never get to see.
The historian Grace Karskens was incredulous. The Museum of Contemporary Art intended marking the nation's oldest dockyard buried beneath the gallery's $53 million extension with an arrow pointing to concrete. Andrew, a contemporary artist of Wiradjuri and Scottish descent, whose flashing arrow will be unveiled at the museum's re-opening this month, said it would help to make the history visible. Drawing on an indigenous shield design, the arrow's zig-zag black and white pattern would be animated in LED lights, creating a hypnotic effect and drawing attention to the site from as far as the Opera House, he said. ''It's a pretty significant reference … the LED is a strong light source, so you are going to be drawn to it,'' he said. His words, inspired by archaeological reports on the dockyard and by his heritage, will be laser cut into the ground below the arrow."  SMH 17 March 2012

Over the last few days Sydney has been hosting the annual writer's festival. The precinct around Walsh Bay was alive with bookish types. Loved the deckchairs so I could laze in the sun and soak up the brain waves in the ether.

In Canberra is this modern looking museum.The National Museum of Australia is a social history museum. It explores the land, nation and people of Australia. Opened in 2001, the National Museum building is an architectural landmark. Inspired by the idea of a jigsaw puzzle, it reflects the many intertwined stories that make up Australia’s history.

Norway's National Day May 17

Today there were lots of Norse in Hyde Park celebrating their National Day. Wiki says "The Constitution of Norway was signed at Eidsvoll on May 17 in the year 1814. The constitution declared Norway to be an independent nation." I must say they all looked very smart, many in their national costume.

Bilgola Beach - Hot Autumn Day

The last few days in Sydney have been beautiful, I was able to start the day with a walk along the beach and a swim, water temp still 20 degrees. Sydney Morning Herald Sydney basks in record May temperature May 10, 2012 A warm autumn has followed Sydney's cool summer, with the city recording its hottest May day in 70 years today. The temperature at Observatory Hill was 29.1 degrees about 1.30pm, making it the hottest day in May since 1942, Weatherzone meteorologist Doug Fenton said. The hottest May day on record for Sydney was May 1, 1919, when the temperature reached 30 degrees.
