A simple grave


In Arlington, Virginia.


On June 8, 1968, Robert Kennedy was buried alongside his brother. Because of a delay, the funeral service had to be postponed until late at night, so 1500 candles were distributed to the mourners. This is the only time a funeral service has taken place at night at Arlington National Cemetery.

    A funeral service at night in candlelight must have been quite a "moving" atmosphere! Incredible situation for a statesman! And such a simple memorial to him is also surprising!

    I did not realise that it was at night, even though I would have followed it slavishly at the time! The sort of event that I remember where I was and what I was doing - and the time it took him to die!

    Never thought of RFK as a 'statesman' before this. More a political brawler.

    I compare the simplicity of this memorial to when doctors with so many titles and letters, revert back to simple 'Mr". Often, less is more.

    Peter, if he was buried 'next to' JFK, in which direction in your bottom photo is this other site?

    I do not mind in the lease if you jaunt OS every so often. I have some of those to flick through, too. Just feel an obligation at the beginning to concentrate on local cemeteries/graveyards. Thanks for continuing to continue ...

    Arlington Cemetery is quite an amazing place to visit. We were very impressed.

    It makes me sad all over again. Yet I'm impressed with the simplicity of this gravestone in contrast to the what the Kennedy wealth could have bought.

    I remember that time very well, the tragedy of three killings after each other, his brother and Martin Luther King was a shame for everyone.
