Dernacourt Diorama

A diorama inside the War Memorial in Canberra, showing the diggers amongst a cemetery on the Somme in WW1. These dioramas have been a feature of the memorial since it opened. They were a way to give some impression as to the lie of the land.

  1. The diorama comes up amazingly well in the photograph.

  2. I thought that to be a telegraph pole at first glance. Then I saw the spread figure.

I am very attached to the dioramas in the AWM. They bring the life-force of the soldiers vividly to the fore.

How worrying to fight in a cemetery. Bodies upon bodies, and all exploded into the air.

  8. Very life like. This diorama succeeds in bringing history alive. It makes me realize how little of our local consciousness focuses on WWI. You see monuments of course, but our emotional response is with WWII and Viet Nam. And who knows for the younger generation. "Living memory" becomes pretty fragile in very little time.

  9. Dioramas vividly bring scenes of the past alive. They are wonderful not only for those who still remember, but also for those of us wanting to learn history.
