Harry's Cafe de Wheels

A Sydney Icon - recommend the "tiger" pie.

Is there a more 'Sydney' location?

Inside the new Centrepoint Westfield, lots of swish lounge areas. Just on opening at 7am when I stroll through.

Rainy Pitt Street Mall

It was bleak walking through Pitt St mall yesterday morning at 7am. The wind and the rain made it a soaking walk by the time I got to work.

AMP Building

In 1965 this used to be the tallest building in Sydney, it is next to Customs House down at the Quay. What is the tallest building in Sydney now? (besides Centrepoint, which is a tower!)

The Emden Gun in Hyde Park

I always like to stop and look at this war relic at the south east corner of Hyde Park, it is a high trafic zone for people walking down the hill from Oxford Street into the city. On a sunny day Hyde Park is a great place to sit around.

This gun was from the Emden a German warship in World War I. The Emden was a successful raider in the Indian Ocean and was run aground by her captain to prevent her from sinking, after engaging the HMAS Sydney at the Battle of Cocos Island. In 1917, a 105 mm gun from Emden was installed as a monument.

Lunchtime under Centrepoint

At lunchtime you can see all the construction workers sitting along the wall having their lunch - watching the world go by. It is a bit of a mess here at the moment as they are undertaking a major refurbishment of Centrepoint.

Garbage rider

Doing a great job. The garbagemen ride on the back of their trucks - haven't heard of any falling off - although they probably don't tell you.

Flags above Centrepoint

The Australian flag on top and the flag of our state (New South Wales) in the middle. These are outside the old Lands Department building - another beautiful Sydney sandstone building.

Monument, Centrepoint

Can you guess who was killed here? Australia claims him as one of our own.

Frazer Fountain

One of two Frazer Fountains in Sydney, both erected in the 1880s. This one is at the entrance to the Domain and is behind St Marys Cathedral. They commemorate John Frazer who ran a grocery shop in York Street and did some early philanthropy work with youth, including donating 1000 pounds to the council for these fountains. The water is not connected to it so you cannot drink here, although most people seem to carry a water bottle these days (or a coffee cup). By the way Sydney's water is fine to drink and I think tastes as good as the bottled variety. Most of it comes via our big dam at Warrangamba but we have just switched on our new desalination plant.

Centrepoint Tower

This Sydney landmark is just over 1000 feet high (305m) and features a revolving restaurant and viewing skywalk. Lots of cranes surround it as Frank Lowy is refurbishing the Westfields underneath it, so lots of jackhammering, trucks and female Irish traffic controllers (Why are they all Irish at the moment?).
