Sandstone Carving Art Gallery Rd

This is carved into a post at the St Mary's Cathedral end of Art Gallery Rd. I love the honey colour of Sydney sandstone - it gives many of our buildings a real warmth. I am unsure of the significance of the actual carving, the numbers 1 and 8 perhaps signify 1888? Any other ideas appreciated.

  1. It's great. You don't see that sort of detail on anything these days.

  5. Julie, one day I was walking past and instead of Henry there was a statue of a Polynesian bouncer up there, there was a notice saying that Henry's statue was being cleaned. I took a snap with my phone camera - will find and post.

  6. The number 81 is a mysterious number. The fact of the obvious time and care taken to carve this number so beautifully surely demonstrates the significance and importance of the mystery to the mason who rendered the work. Not surprisingly it is to be found on a building dedicated to mysterious matters. Apart from being symbolic of the infinite (8 = ∞), mathematically when 81 is reciprocated (1/81) an infinitely repeating cycle appears....012345678901234567890123456789 and so on.
So could it be the number 81 carved?
