Yackandandah

Today on my road trip I have arrived at the exotically named town of Yackandandah or simply Yack to the locals. An old gold town that is beautifully preserved.

The Great Australian Ute

Time for a road trip south of Sydney. Today I am heading off down the Hume Highway for a 8 hour drive, first stop is Yass after 4 hours. Here in the main street is the quintessential Aussie car - a Holden ute or utility. Note the red dust on the back and the roo bar on the front.

Dead Bluebottle

These nasty stingers are sometimes blown in onto Sydney's beaches. Elsewhere in the world it is known as the "Portuguese Man o War".

First Aid

Remove any tentacles. Wash the site of the sting with lots of seawater.

Immerse the victims site of the sting in tolerably hot water. NOT vinegar.

Autumn on the beach.

Last Sunday at Palm Beach the water was 23 degrees centigrade and crystal. Late summer/ early autumn can be the best time on Sydney's beaches.

Pumice on beach

Rocks that float are still on Sydney northern beaches. They are pumice stones - from the largest pumice raft seen in the past 50 years after an underwater volcano erupted off New Zealand in July 2012 form the Havre Seamount, I first noticed them late last year. This one is a Palm Beach. The New Zealand eruption formed a 20,000 sq km raft that eventually spread about 4 million sq km as it broke up. Amazing.
