Australian Light horseman

This is a member of the Australian Light Horse Brigade, today there was a MIlitary Tattoo in my local park. The Australian Light Horse Brigade were a famous WW1 unit who fought in the Middle East against the Turks and Germans. The horses they took were 'Walers'.

  1. Great photo. There's a Light Horse brigade down here, the members are descendents of the original Light Horse Brigade.

  2. i didn't know about the current day Light Horse Brigade. The big road Interchange where the M4 meets the M7 honours the Light Horse. The artwork is not to everybody's taste but it appeals to me.

  3. The poor horses didn't make it back from WW1.

  4. Joan - I probably should have mentioned that they are not part of the current Australian Army but the Australian Light Horse Association. http://www.lighthorse.org.au/
Bruce - very true, I think they were sold or shot.

  5. Why were/are they called "light"? Sad that the horses didn't make it back.

  6. Light cavalry refers to lightly-armed and armored troops mounted on horses, as opposed to heavy cavalry, where the riders (and sometimes the horses) are heavily armored. The missions of the light cavalry were primarily reconnaissance, screening, skirmishing, raiding, and most importantly, communications, and were usually armed with spears, swords, bows and later pistols.
