Bangalley Head 2

This couple are doing some whale watching, it is time for the great Humpback migration from the South Pole to the warmer tropical waters in Queensland where they give birth.

Bangalley Head

Between Whale and Avalon Beach is Bangalley Head. Here is the start of a fishing track to the rocks below, too steep for me.

Whale Beach

The next beach North of Avalon Beach is Whale, more upmarket and secluded, however a risky beach for a swim. On this day there were a pod of dolphins there.

Avalon Beach

Sun at last. Lots of whales around at the moment, saw some breaching yesterday, alas no camera.

The Rainy Main Quad

Cold and wet Sydney University,the architecture matches the mood of the city.

Garbage Bin

This is one of the City of Sydney's garbage bins, three sections and a place for cigarettes on top.

AMP Building

Down by Circular Quay is the old AMP building.
Completed in 1961, the AMP building was Sydney's first skyscraper. Before this heights were restricted to 150 ft.

Entrance to nowhere

In a hidden corner of Hyde Park, on Park Street, is this entrance to what used to be underground toilets.

Kings Cross Sculpture

Above the Kings Cross Tunnel are these ... not sure I like them.

Rushcutters Bay Grandstand

A good place to watch the cricket on a sunny summers day.

Named after a 1940's Mayor of Sydney - Reg Bartley.

In March 1946 Bartley was instrumental in moving to demolish the Sydney Mint and the Hyde Park Barracks, stating that they should "make way for modern structures". Sounds a bit more right wing than the current Mayor - Clover Moore.

Queen Victoria

Queen Victoria outside the QVB, guess what that stands for?
This statue used to be in Dublin until they donated it to us.

Nicholson Museum

Inside Sydney University is the Nicholson Museum, just off the main quad.
It was founded in 1860 and named after Sir Charles Nicholson, Speaker of the NSW Legislative Council and one of the founders of the University.

The Museum houses Australia's largest collection of Etruscan, Greek, Roman, Egyptian, Near Eastern, Cypriot and prehistoric European material.

Entry is free. Opening hours are Monday to Friday 10 - 4.30 and Sundays 12 - 4. Closed public holidays.

Hyde Park Winter

It might be sunny but it is cool, the wind off the Snowy Mountains. Still people out eating their lunch.

ArtPark Sculpture

Sydneysiders are voracious readers. People are reading everywhere. It seems to be an epidemic.

Emden Gun

At the entrance to Hyde Park is a memorial to the capture of the Emden in WW1.
