I have heard about the 6 o'clock swill, a trading hour restriction that was meant to send men home for their tea. Celebrated here in this pub poster in Bondi Junction. Did it work?
I vaguely remember it. My dad didn't go to the pub so I can't answer the question. I think the men did go home but some were drunk. They used to order more than one glass when it was getting close to closing time and swill as many down as fast as they could before they got thrown out.
I remember it although my dad didn't go to the pub either. As a young girl I used to cross the street so as not to go too close to the pub anytime after 5pm. The public bars were also hosed down after 6.
My dad didn't go to the pub either but I remember the six o'clock swill. Get as much into you before the pub closed. Guess you could call it the precursor to binge drinking.

ReplyDeleteIt reminds of those beutiful old advertising posters outside pubs, which you hardly ever see any more.

ReplyDeleteIt probably worked if they had any alcohol at home.
