Next to the Australian Museum on William Street is this old building.
The heritage register says:
The former William Street National School is historically significant as one of only two surviving examples in central Sydney of the forty-four national schools established between 1848 and 1851. The school served as a model for other schools in New South Wales, and is physical evidence of the change from church schools to state controlled schools.
Designer/Maker: attributed to Henry Robertson
Builder/Maker: Unknown
Construction Years: 1851 - 1851
The old with the new ...yes! I would think ..a church and a very early one.
ReplyDeleteI like how the old building sits beside a newer glass one...all under a beautiful blue sky!
ReplyDeleteIts probably this one in the State Heritage Register but I can't see the photos on my computer.

Also the Dictionary of Sydney mentions a school building on William Street.

The State Heritage Register and the Dictionary of Sydney are pretty reliable souces of information.
That's an interesting way to shoot it.
ReplyDeleteThanks Ann, have added extra information!
ReplyDeleteI have soooo many photos of this building as it is very satisfying in shape and in colour. It also shows changes in the brickwork. I had no idea what it was used for. Thanks to both Peter and to Ann.
ReplyDeleteMiss Finigan one of my great great aunts was a teacher at the William Street school in the 1870s in charge of the girls' department. Thank you for this photo but what's the number in William St so I can do a family history tour of Sydney?
ReplyDeleteSorry not sure of the number it is next to the Museum.
